  • The Catch...

    Rated - 2.5 stars

    [Highly rated reviewer]

A mixed bag of fun carnage and annoying and tedious dialogue. About fifteen years ago critics would have waxed lyrical over this early Tarantino inspired thriller and its foul mouthed self conscious postmodernist script. Today all the film references, gags about Bruce Willis (there's even a Pulp Fiction inspired white Honda lurking about) and overly mannered swearing fall a little flat.

The cast is where this film both fails to be good and succeeds in not being dire. The shrill and irritating female gang at the heart of the plot are more reminiscent of that annoying US sorority girl who spent a semester in your halls at uni than a bunch of hardened criminals. They are balanced out by Bruce Willis as sleazy drug kingpin Mel and Forest Whitaker as his psychotic double dealing right hand man, Ronny. It is a shame to see actors of the caliber of Brad Dourif going to waste in underdeveloped supporting roles.

A quality soundtrack, a few fun scenes, and some impressive bloodshed never quite compensate for the annoying female leads, limp script and slick yet unimaginative direction.

I watch and enjoy all sorts of films with various ratings, but this gets a place in the bottom 3 worse films ever! Strange story, with some very odd acting, in fact not even worth writing a review about...

  • Tarantino does better

Back stories explain how we arrive at the opening of the movie, and despite the Tarantino-esque way the movie is done, it doesn't come anywhere near. Even with Bruce Willis and Forest Whittiker doing a couple of steady turns you can't help thinking 'is that it?'. Okay movie but nothing new.

Pure Garbage! Very slow, boring, trying to be too clever, failed! Expected much better from a movie starring a couple of greats Bruce Willis and Forest Whittaker. Well disappointed.

Poor mans Pulp Fiction. An object lesson in making fifteen minutes worth of content last for two hours. Forrest Whittaker does his best - if you can get past the Statey uniform with no blood stains on it?

Pretty blinking dull..... despite the cast. Watched a third of it then seriously struggled to get any further. Weak plot, poorly executed.
