Most helpful review
Simple, complicated, brilliant... !
By PaulaWestwood (397 reviews) from Ashton-Under-Lyne , 25 Mar 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
This is one of those films that haven't been advertised to the max, so may easily pass under your radar totally unnoticed.. but it shouldn't !!! If it does you will miss a warm, darkly humerous and sentimental journey of loss, then finding out the parts of your partner you never knew and on to rebirth into a new life after the loss. Helped along with a really great soundtrack (Doves, Foo's, Magic Numbers, Gomez etc etc), and some wonderful acting, this is a really really good movie. I would definately recommend giving this one a go.- Was this review helpful to you?

Please release me!
By a customer , 17 Nov 2011Dull, pointless, annoying, confusing, very very disappointing. This was a story which COULD have been good, if only the acting were better, and if the loose ends were tied up instead of being left hanging, and if they had actually had a decent actor as the love interest.
Very sorry I wasted my time on this one.- Was this review helpful to you?

Annoyingly Bad!
By medrhcp (7 reviews) from Caernarfon, North Wales , 19 Jan 2011As a non-paid reviewer to the site (which makes me of course no different to anyone else on here) I consider myself more a consumer of Love Film, rather than an individual itching to show their journalistic talents as soon as the credits roll.
The only occasion I tend to feel the need to write a review is under two circumstances; if I really love the film or if I loathe the film. Simple as that. Unfortunately for 'Catch and Release' it crash lands into the latter.
As a young male of 22 my only motive in selecting this film was because of my love for everything Kevin Smith, with this being the final piece in my experience of his filmic canon.
Having said that I do appreciate and enjoy the genre of the Rom-Com so I wasn't at all fazed by the nature of the film.
What I was greeted by within the first 15 mins was what I can only describe as being a selection of adjectives, which carried on at different levels of intensity. These being: prentious, vacuous, weak, bland, I mean I could honestly go on.
The whole thing rather than seeming different, bold, minimalistic and slightly avant garde as the director intended, instead comes across like a film that is malnourished. It's truly devoid of any strong qualities you would expect of the genre across all areas. It lacks first and foremost, romance, as Jennifer Garner's character is simply swept away by Timothy Olyphant within what seems to be a matter of minutes with no interplay or anything. Comedy is nowhere really to be seen as poor Kevin Smith has nothing to bounce off within the vacuous world the film inhabits. The 'other' typically found romantic suitors are frankly half arsed showing no sense of passion expected from the genre, instead just sulking their way through the film. Finally and worst of all, the cardinal rule of a romantic comedy is broken, the sympathy/rooting on for the female protagonist. The character, aplty named gray, seems to have no heady sense of any spectrum of emotion and because of this keeps us at arms length in being able to suspend are disbelief. Instead you feel like you're watching a dimple faced Jennifer Garner pretending to be a grieving widow whenever the film calls for it.
Susannah Grant has a decent track record with her writing accomplishments in film (Erin Brockovich, The Soloist) but this veered so heavily into self indulgence that it's virtually unwatchable.- Was this review helpful to you?
