TV historians have long said that 'Cathy Come Home' is a classic, so having never seen it before, it was with some trepidation that I viewed this DVD. Would it be as good as they said? Thankfully yes!
It's a docudrama about a young and relatively well-off couple who fall on hard times and end up in a seemingly endless downward spiral of misfortune. One that ultimately leads to them dropping off the bottom end of society.
It's a believable production that has cast members interacting with 'real' people on occassion. The editing in the first ten minutes to show the passage of time mixed with pop songs of the day is just superb.
VIEWING TIP: There is a short council film on housing in the extras section. Watch this first. It really sets the scene and explains the situation with the slums and the living standards of the time that this docudrama was made.
In short a wonderful, emotional, hard-hitting slice of classic thought-provoking television.
