An English businessman is on the Ostend-Vienna Express making his way to a important meeting. Two women enter his compartment; one is a beautiful young American woman, the other a frosty elderly Austrian woman played by Oscar-winner Dame Peggy Ashcroft. What follows on the overnight journey has a profound effect on the Englishman. The story is based on Poliakoff's own experience as he travelled from London to Vienna at the age of 25.

    Interrailing for adults

This BBC tv drama comes with a good pedigree. Its stars, Peggy Ashcroft and Michael Kitchen, were enough to make me watch this story of a young man on a trans-European train journey and the characters he meets on the way. If you have ever done such a trip this will bring back those memories vividly. You never quite know what is going to happen and you do care about the characters. A gentle British drama - treat yourself!

    caught on a train

Brilliant portrayal of characters by Kitchen and Ashcroft, character 'Lorraine' felt a bit neglected by comparison. For those of us who love train journeys, the people watching, wondering etc. - a real treat!
