"...A revelatory piece of television film-making..."
"...Brilliant..."
This BBC tv drama comes with a good pedigree. Its stars, Peggy Ashcroft and Michael Kitchen, were enough to make me watch this story of a young man on a trans-European train journey and the characters he meets on the way. If you have ever done such a trip this will bring back those memories vividly. You never quite know what is going to happen and you do care about the characters. A gentle British drama - treat yourself!
didnt finish watching it as could care less what happens next - drab and uninteresting
If you like a play type of film with people that really act you will enjoy this. It has wit and a storyline. A beginning, middle and end.

Brilliant portrayal of characters by Kitchen and Ashcroft, character 'Lorraine' felt a bit neglected by comparison. For those of us who love train journeys, the people watching, wondering etc. - a real treat!

Outstanding lead performances, and interesting location work. Oddly thought-provoking.
Old Europe pitted against a post-war Europe in the thrall of America.
Excellent acting throughout with a real sense of time and place evident to anyone who was there.
As always with Poliakov, a thought provoking and unusal tale. Your worst nightmare train journey but so much more than that.
Beautifully crafted film, subtle, full of tension.
Wonderful atmospheric movie, evoking the Europe of two decades ago with its border crossings and slow trains. Fine acting and direction, especially the delicious performance by Dame Peggy Ashcroft.
Great british drama. Well acted and thoroughly absorbing watching Michael Kitchen's character get drawn into Frau Messner (Peggy Ashcroft)'s grip. It's also a splendid reminder of European rail journeys of the early 80s before popular and anonymous airline travel.
