Carry on Calisto
By a customer from Bath , 03 Dec 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
Plenty of cross dressing and mistaken identities in this farcical opera loosely based on Ovid's somewhat darker tale. Jupiter disguises himself as Diana to seduce the maiden huntress Calisto who then conceives a lesbian passion for the goddess while the shepherd Endymion who is in love with Diana promptly falls in love with the disguised Jupiter! A highly enjoyable pantoesque staging of this early opera.
To the reviewer who gave it one star i would say you should complain to customer services, not take it out on the opera!- Was this review helpful to you?

(4)An opera full of disappearances and reappearances
By risky (102 reviews) from Ashby de la zouch , 23 May 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
Either by design or accident my previous rental was the ballet Sylvia of Delibes, which like this opera concerns the goddess Diana.Sylvia is a follower of the virgin goddess and is sworn to chastity in the ballet, and Calisto is likewise in this opera. Considering its vintage, it dates from 1651 the music is not bad , and some like the danca at the end of act one very good. It is mainly played for laughs, and I do not think I have seen so many actors appearing and disappearing into trapdoors in the stage. The opera, which also includes gods disapearing into the sky, is excellently staged although Mary Whtehouse would not have approved of some of the rude gestures. Good opera for the period but Rameau early the next century improved things some what.- Was this review helpful to you?
