The world-renowned soprano Cecilia Bartoli sings some of the lesser known works of the great composer Antonio Vivaldi during this lovely concert performance. Ably backed by instrumentalists including violinist Marco Bianchi, lutist Luca Pianca, oboe player Maria Grazia d'Alessio, and flautino soloist Giovanni Anonini--who also acts as the conductor--the gorgeous soprano gives a voice to a composer whose legendary work THE FOUR SEASONS has, unfortunately, eclipsed all of his other gems.

This is magnificent.
Currently Bartoli appears to be completely absorbed with the operas of Vivaldi, having several albums and DVDs to her credit, not only performing but researching her material as a musicologist.
In the hands of probably one of the greatest singers of all time this recital is a superlative display of virtuoso technique always placed at the service of the music.
Add to this Bartoli is obviously enjoying every note, reveling in the fast bravura arias, beautifully nuancing every phrase in the emotionally moving arias. She feels the emotion deeply, notice how long it takes her to recover from some of the most moving arias to acknowledge her richly deserved adulation.
The highlight for me is the hypnotic performance of "Non ti Lusinghi la Crudeltade" from Tito Manlio which is sung as a duet with the wonderful baroque oboe playing of Maria Grazia d'Alessio.
Add a great period ensemble, excellent picture and sound, a completely absorbed audience that adds to the pleasure, and you have one of the greatest operatic recital DVDs ever.
