  • A really good Brit Film

I am a big Gervais/Merchant fan, so I started out biased. However, I had also read film critics reviews of the film, which were not that favourable.

This is a film for people who remember growing up in England in the 70's, and is still relevant for kids growing up today.

It is not depressing, it is a stark reminder of how things used to be for the working classes. It contains plenty of humour and hope.

Gervais has a very small acting role in the film, but when he does appear, he is very 'Gervais'.

Merchant has a cameo role. Again he is funny, you will have to giggle.

I don't want to give the plot away, don't expect loads of laughs, it is humorous, in a nice cosy British film kind of a way.

    Give it a go.

Great to help remember England in the 1970s! Really enjoyed this feel-good film, with some good performances all-round! Even my 15-years old enjoyed so that's saying a lot! Excellent standard of British film, as usual.

  • Good Enjoyable Film

Enjoyed the film but it's not terribly deep or searching - it's definitely no 'Friday Night and Saturday Morning' or 'Kes'. Dunno why it has 4 stars here - deserves 3 or 3. 5. The script was slightly too pat for me but the acting and direction was good. Good music as well.

Big fan of The Office, and I think Gervais’ other feature film the Invention of Lying was a good effort. But this did little for me. It seemed too formulaic – working class kid trying to do well for himself, finds nice middle-class girl. OK, I’m probably ten years younger than Gervais, but I find it hard to believe the ‘traditional’ views of the men – the idea that even middle-class girls in the Seventies were still expected to leave school, get married and have kids, with no thought of going out to work. More like something from the Fifties, or even Victorian era! Now I know this a work of fiction, but a mate used to live near Cemetery Junction in Reading. Of course it would be expensive to recreate Victorian terrace houses in the 1970s, without clearing out hundreds of parked cars, Sky dishes and wheelie bins, but where did they film this? It seemed more like a chocolate box Cotswold village rather than a working class suburb! Also, looking at the pictures on this page – of the trailer and the DVD cover – you would think that bad boy Bruce was the main character. He played a leading role but was hardly the main character! Yes, there are a few laughs, and it’s only 90 minutes long, but RG and SM need to do better.

A good product of British cinema but by no means e best. Some of the characters were over stereotyped so ceased to be believable. Nonetheless a good watch.

Really enjoyed this movie the script is the usual high standard from Steve and Ricky and made good reference to the 70's which was my teenage years so brought back some good memories funny but also deeper
