This film is a British historical thriller directed by Neil Marshall who also directed the film called The Descent.

There are some savagely violent battle scenes and an adrenaline fueled chase through the breathtaking Scottish highlands in this movie.

Centurion is set during the war between the Roman soldiers and the Pict tribesmen during the 2nd century Roman conquest of Britain.

Michael Fassbender stars in the lead role as Quintus Dias who is a Roman centurion and the son of a legendary gladiator who leads a group of soldiers on a raid of a Pict camp to rescue the captured General Virilus the commander of the 9th Legion (played by Dominic West).

The son of the Pict leader is murdered during the raid, and the Romans find themselves hunted by a seemingly unstoppable group of the Pict’s most vicious and skilled warriors.

They are led by a beautiful and deadly tracker called Etian who is a mute (played by Olga Kurylenko).

She is hell bent on revenge because her family were butchered by the Romans and she had her tongue cut out by them.

A fantastic film and well worth watching !

The shame about this film, brimming at it is with talent, is that it never really gets above the level of a pot-boiling action thriller. There are echoes of the film Gladiator in here and a comparison between the two illustrates where Centurion falls down: lack of depth, atmosphere and characterisation.

As a Rome 'Buff' I absolutely loved this film. Based around the mysterious 9th Legion, It involves betrayals, ineptitude, cover-ups, and out and out bravery of the ordinary legionaire. Everything that makes rome interesting.

If you have not seen gladiator, westerns or any number of films that this film has lifted idea's from, and also are not concerned for historical accuracy then it is brilliant!

Some well known faces, lots of action and quite bloody but sadly seriously lacking in story and therefore a bit boring. Ok if you have nothing better to watch.
