The principle of reincarnation has provided fascinating material for film-makers over the years. While this slightly sexy romantic comedy visits the same territory as 1941's Here Comes Mr Jordan, it doesn't reach that film's high plateau. Here, a dead husband returns to Earth in a new body, but with a partial memory of his previous life, and falls for the daughter he never knew he had. Cybill Shepherd, Robert Downey Jr and Ryan O'Neal give the idea their best shot, but Emile Ardolino's direction misses the target.
Excessively contrived romantic comedy; we have all been here before and there is nothing noteworthy about this particular variation on a familiar theme.
I've seen this film umpteen times and always find it to be sweet and funny - a chick flick for sure - but I wanted my husband to see it and though he protested here and there throughout the film, he liked it in spite of himself!
It is another good one to watch if you're feeling a bit weak & feeble - or just want some gentle comedy in your day.
The eighties and early nineties saw a mass production of after life stories this is admitedly one of the better options. Cybil Shepard (Moonlighting)still grieves for her dead husband, Robert Downey Jr (Chaplin) is shepards daughters new boyfriend, and when he comes to dinner he starts to believe he was the father in a past life and sets off to prove it. This is a mixture of comedy and romance and typical of this genre sets about to make things just a little more complicated. Innocent fun thats worth a watch, plus listen out for the awesome track by Peter Cetera and Cher.
