Real drama!
By a customer from berkshire , 19 Jan 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
This film has everything that a typical bollywood movie dosen't. It's defnitly worth watching but not if your looking for a feel good movie.
Stoy about Mumtaz, who has to learn to survive life after her parents death...some of her struggles include poverty ,prostitution, rape, murder and motherhood.
Good acting, shocking parts too, the film ends on a very real and sad note but then again not everyone has a 'happy ever after' kind of ending.- Was this review helpful to you?

(14)sordid underbelly
By a customer from Middx , 04 Jul 2008Not your usual bollywood fare. This delves into the harshness and dilemas faced by the destitute moving from a rural to a big city. It reveals the personal tragedies that are played out under the tinsel of Bombay. Acting by Tabu, the lead actress, is understated and believable. The film's transition from presenting Tabu's work colleagues as brash, foul mouthed money grabbers to then giving glimpses into their lives moves you feeling sympathy for them too at the end.- Was this review helpful to you?

Excellent but depressing!
By a customer from Yorkshire , 07 Sep 2007Excellent movie with a brilliant performance by Tabu. It's depressing to think how a bar dancer in Mumbai can never break the mould.- Was this review helpful to you?

sad, ugly face of civilised world..
By medusa from Manchester, England , 25 Feb 2007What a sad portrayal of agony and pain of an innocent girl who was destined to become a bar dancer and prostitute in a male dominated society of Bombay, the story shows the ugly, grotesque face of the civilised world we live in. Tabu was excellent in showing the metamorphosis of an innocent girl into a street girl who tries to maintain her dignity till the last minute. The changing songs in the Chandni Bar with time was a skillful way of showing how time had passed from mid 80's to the new millennium. The film is very disturbing, very sad, and shows some very graphic voilence, and nowhere else have I seen all the evils of modern civilisation cramped in one film. Having said that, the film was longer than it should have been and tended to drag a bit here and there and one was left wondering if anything would ever go right for poor Mumtaz who went through a never ending chain of heart aches and shocks...could life really be so miserable for someone who wants to live with diginity? A very well made film but it started with sadness and ended with sadness and had nothing but sadness in between. An eye opener for those fail to see the gloom and tragedies behind those exotic dancers who seem to know nothing but to make men happy. A well made film though I can't say I enjoyed it...- Was this review helpful to you?
