Sir Richard Attenborough's CHAPLIN is a dramatised depiction of the highs and lows in the life of Charlie Chaplin (Robert Downey, Jr. in a highly acclaimed performance), one of the true comic geniuses of the early silver screen. Presented as the memories of an elderly Chaplin, the narrative opens with the comic's impoverished East London childhood, and progresses through his vaudeville and Hollywood successes to his virtual banishment from the United States, and eventually his welcome back to accept a special Academy Award--20 years too late.

This epic about the early part of Charlie Chaplin's life from co-producer/director Richard Attenborough is, for the most part, extremely entertaining and intelligent, with Oscar-nominated Robert Downey Jr superb in a role that was reportedly coveted by Dustin Hoffman, Billy Crystal and Robin Williams. The opening sequences are genuinely affecting, with Geraldine Chaplin playing Chaplin's mother (and her own grandmother), a music-hall singer who ended her days in an asylum. Yet, overall, the depiction of a growing Hollywood is too rose-tinted and the true tragic tale of a misunderstood comic genius is reduced to a series of star-studded vignettes. The story also suffers from its diffuseness and it's not helped by the device of having the older Chaplin dictate his tale to a diffident (and utterly fictitious) publisher, played by Anthony Hopkins. It's clearly the result of too many cooks, with William Boyd, Bryan Forbes and William Goldman among the writers who dipped into Chaplin's own autobiography and David Robinson's seminal biography for inspiration. And, however good Downey Jr is, you can't help feeling that Johnny Depp might have brought more pathos to the part, especially after seeing Depp re-create the famous bread-roll dance from The Gold Rush in Benny and Joon. Still, this remains a noble attempt to tell the story of the comic genius.

Somewhat stolid biopic that tries to cram in too much of a long life, but which has a fascinating story to tell and often tells it well; it might have been better had it been longer.

Sad, but true... Hollywood can be so cruel.

A man of superior imagination, superior talent, and a heart so deep... Charlie was a very introverted man who had two completely different and opposite personas... There's the joker we know from the screen, and then there's the man behind the scenes that we should all see in order to know what a sad life this man had to leed in order to fulfill all his dreams.

Some people may say he was a womaniser who preyed on young women and in his personal life didn;t deserve to be loved; some may say he was 'too big for his boots' and took too many risks with controversial themes for his, what have become classic, movies...

I can't help but feel somewhat sorry for a man who had a creative side that was bursting at the seams, well ahead of anyone elses imagination. He felt at home with a camera... Not with people.

This film is a great adaptation of his life - as scripted based on his autobiography and I can't help but watch the movie or think about his life without a lump in my throat for few men will be as talented and lonely as Charlie Chaplin...

    Laughably Good

Quite simply this is Robert Downey Jr's best ever performance, and it's a spectacular one at that - one that makes the film worth seeing even if you have no particular interest in Chaplin himself.

    HIghly recommended.

Robert Downey Junior to play literary legend?

    • 16 Jun 2008

Robert Downey Junior is reportedly up for the part of Sherlock Holmes in the upcoming film about the famous detective. Empire magazine asserts that Downey would be "fantastic" in the role of Arthur Conan Doyle's mystery solver, stating that he has starred in a wide variety of film genres and despite his American roots has already proved that he can nail an English accent in Chaplin and Restoration. Directed by Guy Ritchie, known for the popular movies Lock Stock and Two Smoking... Read more
