Most helpful review Charade

  • Awful DVD.

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn are two of my favourite actors and so I relished the chance to see them together when I rented 'Charade'.

30 seconds into the movie, I switched it off and sent it back.

Why? The picture and sound quality of this DVD is awful. The sound is muddy and distorted, the picture blocky, murky and isn't even framed properly!

If you're looking to watch this movie, try a different version.

Audrey Hepburn's character is so dumb she doesn't even know what her dead husband (who kept her dressed like a Paris model) did for a living. Then, the day after identifying said husband's body in the morgue, she falls in love with Cary Grant, at that time old enough to be her grandfather, I would have thought. So far, so 60's, but if you can accept the ridiculous plot then the whole thing is quite amusing with unexpected twist and turns.

This is actually my favourite Audrey Hepburn film - so many people love Breakfast at Tiffany's but I love Charade! It's got mystery and it keeps you guessing but it's also very light-hearted and quite funny. Cary Grant is great alongside Hepburn who looks gorgeous and stylish as ever.

Great story, funny, beautiful Hepburn. They dont make them like this anymore. Great twist at the end. Cary Grant is a cool customer.

I have been watching rubbish modern films lately and have to say that Charade was really excellent. The scenes in Paris, the Givenchy clothes and the intelligent and witty banter between Grant and Hepburn is a must!!

Grant's (or is it Leach's?) familiar mixture of diffidence and concern, his sun-baked chops and cleft chin a pleasure to see against the gloriously creaky back-projected scenes of 1960's Paris. Hepburn is beautiful, fragile, slightly unhinged, and with great comic delivery: 'how do you shave in there'? The whole ensemble is ludicrously well cast. Great story just barrels along. And the music. And the frocks! If you like Bringing Up Baby, Philadelphia Story, The Third Man, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Notorious, The Ladykillers, anything at all like that, then odds on you'll love this jolly romp.
