    [Highly rated reviewer]

Difficult to rate since the performance is worth 5 stars, the opera less since it combines an extremely Catholic view of love outside marriage - Marguerite is hounded in church by the deveil and rejected by her brother on his return from the war - with hedonistic, not to say embarrassing, dancing and patriotic songs. Because of this, compared with Verdi's contemporary operas, the characters are deeply implausible.

That said the performance has as good a set of principles as can be found for any opera, Terfel acting splendidly as Mephisotopheles, and touching singing and acting from Gheorgiu, well supported by Alagan and Keenlyside in a production which does its best to bring out the drama in an implausible plot.
