The choreographed slapstick is as inventively brilliant as ever, but it's not as consistently hilarious as his better-known works and it lacks heart and warmth. Perhaps Chaplin was rather distracted and disillusioned by the real-life legal shenangians and emotional fall-out from his own love life at the time.
