(18)silence?
By Roger Morgan from London , 09 Mar 2012This superb film is almost ruined by having a terrible sound-track attached to it - but ,fortunately, there is a simple solution: turn it off and you have a masterpiece of the silent cinema. Almost excruciatingly funny as well as fundamentally tender- Was this review helpful to you?

just a brilliant piece of film making.
By emperor10 (202 reviews) from newcastle upon tyne , 09 Feb 2011chaplin's penultimate silent movie, for me, is up there with the best movies of all time.it took chaplin 2 years to make,a real labour of love.from the opening scenes to the last, it just grabs the viewers attention, and doesnt let go.ive read, and totally agree, that within the final 5 minutes, the acting is possibly the best ever commited to celluloid - silent, all emmotions shown through 2 peoples faces, it really tugs at the heart strings.and then theres the comedy.the comedy looks effort-less and brings laugh out moments, when in fact its comedy thaty has been rewritten, and rehearsed many, many times by chaplin the perfectionist. this blu ray, when bought, comes with a blu ray and normal dvd version, and its the normal version that has brilliant extras on it. so what you wont see,(if you get the blu ray vewrsion) is film of chaplin, without the tramps costume, tash and make up,rehearsing scenes.the doco also informs us that because of her lateness and non commital nature to the film, chaplin sacked the female lead, only to reinstate her because, despite her faults, he couldnt get anyone to play the poor flower girl, who could envoke emmotions as well as she could.superb.- Was this review helpful to you?

Excellent rhythm and pace of humour
By Seedyvee (183 reviews) from Grantham , 05 Dec 2010Rhythm and pace of humour and an interesting and poignant storyline are excellently integrated in this film. The gags are brilliantly executed and repetitive actions are never one too many. The film ends just at the right moment where sentimentality could easily have been the last impression. To me a perfected silent movie.- Was this review helpful to you?

lights Up The screen
By ZiggyTheKid (86 reviews) from Dundee , 06 May 2009some brilliant slapstick and the usual sentiment; the highlights here are a boxing match and Chaplin in a restaurant, certainly amoungst his best.- Was this review helpful to you?
