Bonus Disc!!!
By a customer from Haywards Heath , 06 Jul 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
Advice for all, not just purists: Don't order Disc 1, only get the Bonus Disc. The voiceover completely ruins a gorgeous film. This is a brilliant film from a genius. The Kid is a better start for Chaplin virgins.- Was this review helpful to you?

(25)Gold rush - the talkie version!
By GoldRushtalkie (2 reviews) , 27 Jun 2012Decided to rent this 'classic' having never seen it.
Overall, I was pleased with the movie, Charlie Chaplin delivering another faultless performance.
The film was nice and short at just over an hour, and it needs to be, as there isnt too much goin on.
Best scenes are the boot eating and the dancing bread rolls.
This is however not teh original silent version, but the 1940's 'remix' with narration by one Charlie Chaplin himself! This is fine, but I wish teh blu ray had the original version on teh disc as well as a bonus to compare...
Cobsidering the age of the movie, the blu ray delivers a sterling picture. A bit grainy, but cmon, this is the twenties!- Was this review helpful to you?

WRONG EDITION
By BALEBRIDGE (1 review) , 25 Mar 2012DO NOT RENT THIS EDITION AS IT ONLY CONTAINS A 1942 RE-RELEASE WHICH HAS A NARRATION OVER IT THAT RUINS THE FILM AND CUTS SOME TWENTY MINUTES FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTERPIECE. EITHER FIND A DVD EDITION WITH THE ORIGINAL 1925 MASTERPIECE THAT IS SUBLIME OR FIND IT ONLINE- Was this review helpful to you?

A classic - you can find the proper version in the extras
By a customer , 15 Jan 2012A classic of its era, with a number of remarkable scenes - some notable for their staging (the miners crossing the pass, the tilting hut) and others for the performance (the boot eating).
If you rent the feature disc, the main feature is indeed the 1940s version with orchestra and Chaplin's voiceover. Presumably he felt the need to modernise the, by then, unfashionable silent film. But look in the extras and you will find the 1925 version restored with inter-titles and piano accompaniment. It is interesting to compare them. Not only is the silent version preferable - after all it was made to be seen that way - but it contains at least two short sections that were cut out of the 1940s verison, including the ending.- Was this review helpful to you?

silent means silent not descriptive dialogue!
By Agfa (2 reviews) , 19 Nov 2011Agree with criticism of 'descriptive dialogue- hilarious! How can you have a voice over on a film made in silent movie era? I will be careful to watch for such nonsense in future.- Was this review helpful to you?
