Advice for all, not just purists: Don't order Disc 1, only get the Bonus Disc. The voiceover completely ruins a gorgeous film. This is a brilliant film from a genius. The Kid is a better start for Chaplin virgins.
A must-see in the true sense of the expression - contains some of the all-time classic moments of screen comedy [The Tramp eating his boot and sucking the nails clean to stave off his hunger, his bread roll dance etc] and typical Chaplin pathos cooked to perfection.
An innocent, heart-warming gem. [DVD restoration is very impressive, undoubtedly the film didn't look or sound this good in the 80 years since the first print dried]
This is pure Chaplin genius. The humour is subtle yet bordering on slapstick. It is also a touching story of man's obsession with wealth and shows the human side.

A Chaplin classic ruined by a Chaplin voiceover which you do not have the option to switch off. Try and get the original silent version instead.
Despite all the advances in film technology Charlie Chaplin is still there among the greats. It is so refreshing to be entertained in such a simplsitic manner, children loved it.
Possibly one of the finest comedies ever, Chaplin's masterpiece has many scenes that touch the heart, the devouring of his right shoe, the dance he does with the two bread rolls and the thrilling lopsided climax! Coupled with laugh out loud moments are others that are poignant and moving. legendary stuff.
These films can do no wrong!!!
It's in all the top 100 lists, he's the funny Englishman who defined the golden age of Hollywood and Gold Rush is packed with now recognisable film references; but still I can't enjoy it more than I feel I should. If I was watching it in 1925 I'm sure it would have me in stitches, but by today's standards I'm not convinced.
'I'm going away, and when I return I shall come back!' - Charlie Chaplin, Gold Rush
I hadn't watched any Chaplin since I was a child, and a couple years back I rented a DVD with his *very* early material, and I was sorely disappointed. But Gold Rush is really good, surprisingly funny. I was in stitches at his physical comedy, like when two big men fight over a loaded shotgun, and the gun keeps pointing at Charlie ('the Little Fellow') no matter where he tries to flee to in the room.
Simply superb, hilarious, wonderful, fun. It deserves all the praise it gets. Everyone should see this film at least once in their lives.
