Writer/director Kevin Smith debuted with the hip, funny Clerks, then stumbled with the self-indulgent Mallrats. But he came up trumps again with this cool, hilarious and sexy romantic comedy in which Ben Affleck plays New Jersey comic-book writer Holden, who falls for pal Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams), despite the fact she's a lesbian. In addition to the chemistry between the two leads, it has an insightful and even heartbreaking script from Smith, hilarious support from Jason Lee as Affleck's sceptical pal, plus Jason Mewes and the director himself returning as regular characters Jay and Silent Bob. (Fans of Smith's films will be delighted to learn that Bob actually speaks here, and in so doing utters some of the most poignant words of the film.) Watch out for a brief appearance from Matt Damon in what must be one of the hippest love stories of the 1990s.

Kevin Smith Gets A Bit More Serious

This film while having it's undeniable Kevin Smith moments is the most serious film he has made to date, and is none the worse for it. The story of a man chasing a lesbian turns out to be really quite moving with Ben Affleck and Joey Lauren Adams giving impressive performances as the two lovers in question. Jason Lee plays to the more typical Kevin Smith type as the cynical wisecracking Banky but his motivations are also delved into. Overall yet another great movie by Mr Smith, he doesn't seem to be capable of making bad ones!

The total antithesis of the usual rom-com

Chasing Amy is a film which has arguably no more an adventurous plot than 'boy meets girl, boy gets girl, boy loses girl.' However, in Chasing Amy, Writer and director Kevin Smith uses his special blend of off-beat characters, clever humor, and engaging dialogue to turn a simple romantic comedy into a complex, intelligent, thought provoking, and very original take on love, friendship, and the wages of jealousy. The much underrated Jason Lee is nothing short of superb and Ben Affleck gives a performance he has never since bettered. The total antithesis of the usual dreary run of the mill rom-com, Chasing Amy is a must see movie.

    Woeful

This is one of the few films that I couldn't watch to the end. The plot has some merit but the dialogue is so poor and the points of view so infantile that it made me cringe.

The effects of romantic love on friendships and the perceived need in society to "pigeonhole" sexual orientation are fertile ground for the creative arts BUT please do the subject some justice - the lack of subtelty in this film was astonishing.

    One of Kevin Smiths best!

I'll keep this brief - Excellent movie, more of Kevin Smiths great style of humor and made even better if you know all the references to all the other movies in the series. Watch it!

Or maybe even 4 stars - worth checking out for sure!

The first time I saw this movie I thought it was fantastic. The second time round I was far less impressed, but by the third my opinion went up again. I think the moral is to watch 'Chasing Amy' without any wildly high expectations of its ability to touch or to amuse - as both are done in both a relatively patchy, unsubtle and almost immature fashion. The characters in particular are relatively one-dimensional - some of their monologues can prove downright tiring! - and I can see how the film on the whole could be scorned by some.

That said when you dont demand or expect any genius from this film it may well surprise you in the end. The dialogue, if a little contrived is, -for the most part - amusing and the film is always uncompromisingly individual. The combination of senitmentality with lowgrade humour works well in my mind - but again then I was also a huge fan of Shallow Hal!

Perhaps most importantly though there is a hugely intelligent underlying comment in this film - both about the traditional american male perception of female sexuality and the fragile nature of both relationships and sexuality.

Definitely worth seeing - just dont expect a masterpiece.

Well, I watched it all the way through, though in some places I had to grit my teeth to do so. Not my type of film really, but not so bad that someone out there could well think it's fantastic. Try it and see.

    Only pseudo-intellectuals need apply

This is one of the few films in existence that have actually sent me from being wide awake to fast asleep. I saw about two thirds and would give it 1 star but, given its cult status, one can only assume it had a good ending so i'll pop another one on there. The wafer-thin plot is questionable but regardless of that, i am amazed that there are such kevin smith fanatics out there when so much of his characters' dialogue seems so trite and unnecessary...can't he just write a book and get it out of his system rather than come out with rants-with-a-vague-side-plot like this? Maybe he should get into french cinema.

    Worst Film Ever

This is an awfull awfull film. It appears to have been made when the world first discovered lesbians (1997 I don't think so). Utterley rediculous, avoid at all costs!!

    Waste of time

Dialogues are stupid, characters unreal, plot childish. Boringly unwatchable crap - after five minutes I just skipped through the chapters.

    Not for me...

I watched this one on the back of having watched Mall Rats, and thought I'd be in for a treat, but I was wrong.

Jason Lee is highly underused in this film, and as for Ben Affleck, I don't much like him as an actor, and he was in the film way too much!

No where near as funny as Mall Rats, and the storyline was a bit too predictable for me. Sorry to say that this one is not worth a watch
