We live our lives under Milk Wood

If all DVDs were this good I might not be enticed away from my flat for anything else but work. Directed by Ethan Hawke (another talented young actor trying his hand at directing and showing the masters how its done see also Zach Braffs Garden State) this unusual and challenging film shares some of the qualities of the wonderful Linklater movie Beyond Sunset in which Hawke starred opposite Julie Delphy. Based on a play, the film is set in Chelsea Walls, a New York Hotel which provides a permanent and temporary home to an assortment of writers, musicians, painters and poets who make their glorious imperfect lives within its walls. A thoughtful, lyrical film, Chelsea Walls treats us to complex reflective characters whose efforts to communicate and connect with one another are interesting, touching and frequently beautiful. The large cast all impress but Kris Kristoffersen stands out in his performance as an alcoholic writer, along with Uma Thurman as the introverted and lonely Grace. Admirers of Dylan Thomas and Billie Holiday will want to see this: a feast for the eyes and the ears and a moving homage to New York, to art and to love.- Was this review helpful to you?
