Cheri is a beautiful film, with beautiful performances by Michelle Pfeiffer and Rupert Friend, beautiful locations which take one's breath away and gorgeous clothes and gorgeous hats! It is a curiously underrated film which has probably the best performance Michelle Pfeiffer has ever given notwithstanding Dangerous Liaisons. She is an ageing courtesan in the Paris of the Belle Epoque which, in fact, lasted from the late 1800s to the outbreak of WW1. He is Fred, the son of one of her 'friends' (also a former courtesan) and he calls her by the French nickname for 'auntie'. Her nickname for him is 'Cheri'. When he is 19 and she is approaching 50, they fall in love. They stay together for six years until he is forced by his mother to marry a young girl (the daughter of a courtesan) who has a fortune. The most moving part of the film deals with the consequences of 'Cheri's' marriage.
If you are a romantic you must see this film.
If you love gorgeous 19th century costumes and hats you must see this film. If you are a straight man you should see this film because of the superb vintage cars and the supremely elegant steam train (the French version of the Orient Express). If you are gay you must see this film because of Rupert Friend. If you love Paris and love historical romances you should see this film. If you like escapism you should see this film. Don't miss it.

If you are looking for an undemanding film, good to look at on a Friday night with a bottle of fizzy wine and a box of chocs, then this is the one for you.
Kathy Bates was given a special 60th birthday present from director Stephen Frears - a portrait of the actress from their new film Cheri. Bates stars as a former courtesan in the period drama, alongside Michelle Pfeiffer and Rupert Friend. And she was stunned when Frears surprised her with a unique piece of movie memorabilia to mark her milestone birthday last June (08). She tells the New York Post's columnist Cindy Adams, "Towards the end, there is a scene where Rupert and I and his young... Read more
