Facing imminent death while laying eggs at Tweedy's English farm, a group of chickens led by the determined Ginger (Julia Sawahla, BBC-TV's ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS) plan to escape their prisonlike coop. The situation goes from bad to worse when the sinister Mrs. Tweedy (Miranda Richardson) decides to stop selling eggs and use the .. Read more

Four years in the making and easily the most ambitious project yet undertaken by the award-laden Aardman Animation unit, this feathered pastiche of PoW classics such as The Great Escape and Stalag 17 is an awesome achievement by consummate film-makers. Rocky, a lone free-ranger rooster, promises to help the hens in Mr and Mrs Tweedy's high-security egg farm find a way to freedom. The nods to classic film moments are funny and plentiful, the largely British voice cast (Julia Sawalha, Jane Horrocks, Miranda Richardson, Timothy Spall) lends moments of humour and pathos, and the set pieces are exhilarating in their ingenuity and comic élan. The need to justify Mel Gibson's vocal presence as Rocky slows the pace occasionally, but this is still a soaring flight of fancy.
In part a parody of prisoner-of-war films such as The Great Escape, which will mean little to its intended audience, this gradually develops a comic momentum and absurdity all of its own, with a quaint handmade charm that proves irrestible.
"...Poultry has never been so stuffed with personality....A little slapstick, a little action, rich characters and a whopping serving of wit. All baked to near-perfection." -- 3.5 out of 4 stars
Second time of seeing this film and it's just as good as i remembered, hired it for my boyfriend to see and he loved it to.Great entertainment for all the family. I think the people who have written bad reviews of this animation/film musn't have a sense of humour as it is very witty, give it a go im sure you won't be dissapointed.
When you consider most animated films these days are digital, this one shows the skill and expertise of plastic animation can be just as good and sometimes better when the characters and story are as compelling as 'chicken run'.
Admittedly it did take them around five years to complete but is one of the great animated films of our time!
The plot is set in a chicken farm in Yorkshire where the chickens are styled as if in a POW camp and are trying to escape the evil couple that own the farm, lead by the only male chicken who is well past his sell by date. One day after many failed attempts at escape, a new male chicken arrives who is young and dashing and is given the role of heading the escape to freedom.
This film will have you smiling and laughing out loud the whole way through, its fantastic!!
Great fun if not slightly Tom and Jerry whilst pretending to be grown up. Animation as good as Nick Parkes has done before with his Hallmark Caricatures. Story a bit samie as some of his previous titles. Good overall effect and nice warm ending.
i liked it the way the chickens escaped in the plane. If i could i would buy it. what i did not like about it is that it was too long. There were lots of good characters in the film and Rocky was my favourite. worth watching
......I don't like gravy!"
"Chickens go in, pies come out."
"What kind of pies?"
"Apple."
"Oooo, my favourite!"
Lines such as these are apparent throughout the film and really help make it the very funny film it is. I especially like the dippiness and stupidity of the ever-knitting Babs (brilliantly voiced by Jane Horrocks), who appears to be brain-free!
You could easily imagine Rocky (Mel Gibson) as a "stud" to the ladies, although I felt that maybe a British accent would have been better for a British film, as British accents can be sexy too!
I found the film to be very realistic, and I could easily imagine apparently stupid chickens plotting their escape from a farm. Even now as I pass by farms I can see them huddled together in the dark, just waiting for that opportun moment to break free. After this film, you'll be doing the same! Add it to your collection and watch it whenever you need cheering up!

this film is very entertaining.
my children are big wallace and gromit fans, and this film made by the same animation team did not disappoint.
they watched it at least a dozen times before i could send it back.
This is a fun filled film for all the family,From the makers of Wallace and Gromit Has some witty one liners this will keep the kids And Adults glued to the telly BRILLIANT ****
Well!!!! A very good very funny film.. yep even as a rooster Mel Gibson is phwaoor!! And the children loved the action, the animated chickens are out of this world, the creators have shown how much hard work it takes and deserve every penny they earn from this film. Its funny for all the family and the character's voices belong to those plastacine chickens!!
Its a tale about a chicken farm, and a plot not unsimilar to "Escape from Victory".....
Our whole family enjoyed this and recommend it for a family film with alot of laughs and a few tears!!
All the usual touches of English humour you'd expect from a Nick Park film. Perhaps not quite as utterly perfect as the Wallace & Grommit trilogy, but I suspect Im being ultra-critical.
Chicken Run is highly enjoyable, with lots of little jokes in the background for when you can take your eyes off the main characters.
This is animation at its best. It is a film that you need to see over and over again to catch every gag and comedy moment from the characters. Has lots going on, a real quality film.
Would recommend this to anyone. A great rental!
