Classic Jack
By a customer from Stevenage, England , 21 Sep 2003[Highly rated reviewer]
Jack Nicholson is in danger of being remembered as a snarling, gurning, eyebrow-wriggling loon, chewing up scenery and gloriously overacting his way through some otherwise forgettable films. Which would be a shame, as he is an incredibly talented actor, and in more types of roles than some might imagine. One of these roles is that of Jake Gittes in Chinatown, a dour and bleak detective story and probably Polanski's finest film. What seems to be a routine adultery investigation spirals into a wide-reaching conspiracy somehow connected to water supplies, which Gittes uncovers to his cost as his investigation continues. Evocative, brilliantly observed, and made with meticulous attention to detail, the film is a real slow-burner, with Nicholson as it's centre, doggedly searching for the truth as the intrigue deepens. The ending is also justifiably famous - whether you agree with Polanski or not, his downbeat and pessimistic ending certainly has resonance.- Was this review helpful to you?

(133)Brlliant noir thriller
By gianino (614 reviews) from London , 09 Dec 2012Incredibly good. The scipt is amazing and the acting is outstanding; Jack Nicholson is quite impressive and so are Faye Dunaway and John Huston. It's an old style dark thriller and probably the best Polanski movie- Was this review helpful to you?

Forget it Jake, its Chinatown
By surreygirl (20 reviews) from Sutton , 02 May 2012Ilove this film. Nicholson plays a private investigator who becomes involved in a case which leads him into the heart of government corrouption.
Twists and turns, red herrings and plot changes keep you entranced and wanting to know the ending. Stylishly filmed, one of the best noir mystery films I have ever seen. Roman Polanski has created a cinematical diamond that should be on everyones 'Films to see before you die' list.
Superb performances from Nicholson and Dunaway which won them many awards, and its not hard to see why. Dunaway smoulders on screen and the chemistry between them is electric.
Please, if there is one thing you do in 2012, watch Chinatown!- Was this review helpful to you?

Good story.
By Olpa (1 review) from Manchester , 22 Nov 2011The storyline keeps us thinking (and then still suprises) till the very end and that, with the crew like Jack Nicholson, makes the movie worth seeing. The production being carried out in 1974 is really recognized. I think it is a very good material for a remake.- Was this review helpful to you?

Slick Nicholson
By a customer , 12 Sep 2011Slick and atmospheric. Reminds me why I used to love Jack Nicholson - his character combines humour and intensity. Plot develops in a way that isn't too crazily fast-paced - the downfall of many modern films.- Was this review helpful to you?

Chinatown my Chinatown
By Emjay69 (327 reviews) from Kidlington, Oxford , 10 Sep 2011Jack Nicholson as a young man. Brilliant film. Excellently produced. Extremely well acted.
In fact, considering the age of this film, it is a living testimony as to how films used to be made without modern day technology. Well worth watching again, and again, and again...- Was this review helpful to you?
