Desultory, overlong, friendly Western in the Ford manner. Easy to watch and easier to forget.

I think this is my favourite John Whyne western next too Cowboys. They just don't seem to make them as good these days.

    Slice of Americana

This is an old-fashioned western made after the end of the golden era for westerns. Its not a masterpiece but it is good in its own way. The plot and the story are old-fashioned: the usual struggle of good against evil, the religiosity of Americans in the background and above all Wayne playing the quintessential American hero - tough, tenacious but a fair man with a good heart.

The movie caters to those with a more optimistic political view of America - the idea of progress as a good and constantly improving and perfecting the present.

Left-Liberals will not like the film. Its a mini-celebration of all that was seen as good about America - honesty, decency, fairness, law-abidingness, Christian conscientiousness.
