A tough cattle baron fights con artists, corrupt officials--even Billy the Kid--in order to keep his ranch. It comes down to the town founder John Chisum (John Wayne) against the immoral Lawrence Murphy (Forrest Tucker) and the town isn't going to be big enough for both of them. Desultory, overlong, friendly Western in the Ford manner. Easy to watch and easier to forget.

I think this is my favourite John Whyne western next too Cowboys. They just don't seem to make them as good these days.

    Slice of Americana

This is an old-fashioned western made after the end of the golden era for westerns. Its not a masterpiece but it is good in its own way. The plot and the story are old-fashioned: the usual struggle of good against evil, the religiosity of Americans in the background and above all Wayne playing the quintessential American hero - tough, tenacious but a fair man with a good heart.

The movie caters to those with a more optimistic political view of America - the idea of progress as a good and constantly improving and perfecting the present.

Left-Liberals will not like the film. Its a mini-celebration of all that was seen as good about America - honesty, decency, fairness, law-abidingness, Christian conscientiousness.

    Brilliant

What can i say not the dukes best but a highly enjoyable film. My children enjoyed this film although it wasn't all guns blazing it had a story which they followed and saw how all the characters where connected unlike some films where there is no story just mindless gunfights.
