  • Don't make him angry...

Andrew Dominik's film of the eponymous Australian mobster is a real experience. Eric Bana's performance is so realistic that you cannot help to be disturbed by the violence, which peppers the film liberally.

The scene where he's stabbed by a fellow inmate (and friend) is utterly chilling and genuinely scary. When he later turns up unannounced at said friend's house, you could be forgiven for hidding behind the sofa.

Like so many memorable villains you will find yourself strangely drawn to Chopper and almost be rooting for him. Bana's performance is larely responsible for this and just remember, don't make him angry; you won't like him when he's angry...

As a born and bred Australian, I've read a lot into the story of 'Chopper' a lot of it is hear-say and a lot of the stuff he claims to have done has not been proven, a little bit like the notorious Charles Bronson, having worked in prison I know that both these characters tend to bend the truth a bit, so everything portrayed in both there films take with a pinch of salt as a lot of it is fabricated, and blown out of proportion. well acted though, and choppers volatile but needy character is well portrayed, you almost feel sorry for him, the fact he never actually murdered anyone in his life makes this almost sad, the guy lives on a false reputation, and will probably never see life outside of a prison because of it, but I think that's just the way he likes it, just like Bronston violence and crime are all they know, better behind bars than on the street.

I was hoping for more substance to this film. There was plenty of gore and edge but I still wasn't that interested probably due the writing.

i have watched this for the first time today and can't believe i have missed this until now. Don't be put off by the fact its a dated Australian movie as it stands the test of time extremely well and is up there with many indie classics. Utterly chilling in parts and laugh out loud in others. Eric Bana and his sharp comedic tongue is ideal in this role and gives the character the charisma you need to for an anti-hero. A must see if you like crime based graphic films.

Yes, this guy did some violent things in his life. Unfortunately they managed it to make this movie kind of like a porn. But there's actually a story behind it which is really fascinating. My advice is to read his book: Mark 'Chopper' Read: Road to Nowhere (2011)
