Adapted from the novel by Stephen King, this killer car chiller is the ultimate in auto eroticism. The idea that a 1958 Plymouth Fury can turn into a jealous mistress is a cracker and, through his ingenious use of close-ups and seductive angles, director John Carpenter turns Christine into the sassiest thing on four wheels. He also gets a likeable performance out of Keith Gordon as the geek who becomes a dude the moment he inserts his key in the ignition. It's overlong and is more effective as a dark comedy than a horror, but remains a triumph of subtle effects work and soundtrack selection.
"...[The] flashy auto dominates everything, its jealousy is effectively, and sometimes humorously conveyed....Technically, the film is outstanding..."
What can I say? I havent seen this film for like 10 years but remembered it as very scary.
Watched it and wow! Its still lost none of its charm or appeal. Its not like todays horror films, where they scare you with vile images, its a proper head trip! You never see anything really gory, but somehow youre still just as scared.
The acting is very good, and the car is a classic American beauty.
Watch it on a dark rainy night, alone, and it'll give you nightmares :-)
Awesome classic, still as good today as when i first saw. Excellent effects that stood the test of time and outstanding oldies soundtrack. This red devil disquised as a Plymouth Fury shows how our possessions ultimately possess us and the effects of greed on our lives ? A jealous lover ? Hell hath no fury like a 1958 Plymouth scorned ? The infiltration of the US car market with foreign vehicle ? Maybe its just a killer car from the mind of Steve King !Anyway, still one of the horror movies of the 80's that remain a great movie !!!!!
