Adapted from the novel by Stephen King, this killer car chiller is the ultimate in auto eroticism. The idea that a 1958 Plymouth Fury can turn into a jealous mistress is a cracker and, through his ingenious use of close-ups and seductive angles, director John Carpenter turns Christine into the sassiest thing on four wheels. He also gets a likeable performance out of Keith Gordon as the geek who becomes a dude the moment he inserts his key in the ignition. It's overlong and is more effective as a dark comedy than a horror, but remains a triumph of subtle effects work and soundtrack selection.

What can I say? I havent seen this film for like 10 years but remembered it as very scary.
Watched it and wow! Its still lost none of its charm or appeal. Its not like todays horror films, where they scare you with vile images, its a proper head trip! You never see anything really gory, but somehow youre still just as scared.
The acting is very good, and the car is a classic American beauty.
Watch it on a dark rainy night, alone, and it'll give you nightmares :-)
If you have never read, or seen, a Stephen King movie/book, Christine is a fantastic introduction. A totally brilliant film, first scary movie I ever saw at the tender age of .... well, lets just say I was too young for the censors!
Still has the ablility to scare the bejesus out of me, especially at the end when you KNOW something will happen ... but you can't help jumping!
I like this film because it is a horror film with a difference. The idea that a car can become possesed is bizzare, and it could have turned out to be such a bad film.Instead the way the story was approached and finally filmed by the director, seems to have pulled the irons out of the fire and made it a success.
If you are expecting a story faithful to King's novel, then you'll be disappointed. Although some of the dialogue is lifted directly from the page, many of the characters and violence is absent.
If you are a fan of John Carpenter and know his older movies to be best, then you'll find this a little tame, but still a Carpenter effort at heart. The dark mood and chilling score you are after are all present. The cast do as well as they can, but as it has been before said the star is the Plymouth car - smashed a dozen times, the only real gore in the movie.
This is one of my all-time favourites - I have the DVD, the video and the original book.
My only gripe about the movie is that it does miss out large sections of the book - maybe they should do a mini-series about Christine that adds in the bits that were in the book that were missed in the movie, like they did with Rose Red (another Stephen King)

I was drawn to watch this when I noticed it was a John Carpenter film based on a Stephen King story. The story follows an old car that falls in love with its owner (stay with me here!!) and tends to look out for them as well as getting a bit jealous at times!! The car also tends to have an effect on the owner, making them a bit obsessive as well. So, your fairly typical story then :o) The way it is filmed really does give some character to the car and I especially liked the use of the radio / songs to speak for the car. The pace of the film is quite slow, but I didn't find myself clock watching at any point. If your looking for a big gorey non-stop horror-thon then this won't be what your after, but otherwise its definitely worth a look.
A classic horror. The flaming car scene is often copied but never equaled. Carpenter was at the height of his directing skills when he made this. Rent it.
Great film but not as good as the book though..
I first watched this when i was a kid and even then it sent chills down my spine...
i would love a car that had its own personality. Good or evil!!!
Great film

Awesome classic, still as good today as when i first saw. Excellent effects that stood the test of time and outstanding oldies soundtrack. This red devil disquised as a Plymouth Fury shows how our possessions ultimately possess us and the effects of greed on our lives ? A jealous lover ? Hell hath no fury like a 1958 Plymouth scorned ? The infiltration of the US car market with foreign vehicle ? Maybe its just a killer car from the mind of Steve King !Anyway, still one of the horror movies of the 80's that remain a great movie !!!!!

A Classic in its time, but for me..the music and cars and what made the film...

"...The film is made with spectacular efficiency....CHRISTINE turns out to be full of Carpenter landmarks..."
Thin and gruesomely extended horror flick which never begins to be convincing. For teenagers only.
