Don't waste your time
By a customer from London, England , 14 Apr 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
Badly shot, badly written and with second-rate performances throughout. Leaves you wondering what the point was; one of the worst films I've ever seen. A real waste.- Was this review helpful to you?

Stick with it - it's worth it.
By jennyfilm (13 reviews) from Carmarthen , 15 Jul 2011I'm so glad I did watch it right through as it developed into something of a masterpiece. How anyone can say the acting was poor is beyond me. On the contrary each member of the cast did a superb job in making his or her character come alive. I was there with each one of them. Really, really good writing and acting. Yes, the story, like Crash, seemed fragmented and complicated at first but the various elements weave together into a thought-provoking satisfying whole. Can't say any more without giving any of it away. Watch it and love it!- Was this review helpful to you?

The ayes have it.
By Nitaray (222 reviews) from Farnham , 18 Apr 2011After the first half hour, when the mists clear, this becomes quite interesting and enjoyable. The writing is intelligent, the dialogue contemporary and witty, and the acting -for the most part- very good. Unfortunately, some of it is distinctly over the top and overly dramatic - particularly in the case of Penelope Cruz, who plays a destitute unmarried mother, driven to prostitution. Something has been done to her face, heaven knows what, but it looks very ugly and the scenes between her and Rhys Ifans, who plays her social worker, are melodramatic bordering on the laughable. However, the story is written and directed by Martha Fiennes and from what little I know about her, I think most of the films faults may be down to inexperience iin the field of direction.
The story holds a mirror up to society (as it was in 2005, of course),highlighting certain sections of it and inviting our criticism. Damien Lewis plays a young city lawyer whose ambition leads him astray. His wife, played to the hilt by Kristen Scott-Thomas, is lonely, frustrated and bored, spending her life buying high-priced clothes to fill her already over-full closet and dreaming of a breast enhancement. Their unseeing concentration on acquisition means that they have little time for their small son, who is alone so much that he hardly knows how to communicate with others.
The only two actors in this film who don't over act are Ralph Fiennes, playing an art historian and close family friend, and the reliable Harriet Walters, who plays the neglected wife of a city doyen, played by Ian Holm.
Some of these characters are a little cliched.I found that watching the film a second time helped me get to grips with it. I think it's interesting that there are so many wildly differing reviews of it. Had I just read the first one, which called it 'shatteringly awful', I would never have ordered it . And missed out.- Was this review helpful to you?

Chromophobia 2005
By Surbian (2 reviews) from Chelmsford , 16 Apr 2010I hadn't heard of the film before, but I was amazingly impressed. A very stylish and intelligently put together film. The film starts off showing us the lives of 4 very different people, from very different backgrounds and following completely separate paths. As the story unfolds, the lives of these people become intricately interwoven, until everything comes together in a crescendo of emotion! Excellent performances, some great imagery, beautifully shot! I highly recommend it!- Was this review helpful to you?
