When Buck, an immature 27-year-old, is reunited with his best friend, Chuck, a successful music industry executive, his resulting infatuation threatens to ruin Chuck's previously stable existence. CHUCK & BUCK successfully blends comedy, drama, and stalker films and is made all the more immediate by Miguel Arteta's decision to shoot on digital video. This, coupled with the striking performances by the two leads--both nonprofessional actors (Mike White and Chris Weitz are successful screenwriters)--results in a highly original film that can't easily be categorized.

Essentially a film about stalking, this excellent independent feature confounds expectations by opting for the creepy and the quirky. This surprise tack keeps the viewer intrigued and allows sympathy for both stalked and stalker, and it's rounded off with a delicious twist in the tale. Chuck (Chris Weitz) and Buck (Mike White) are former schoolfriends who've drifted apart, but remain bonded by a single act of homosexual dabbling. When the childlike Buck's mum dies, he renews contact with Chuck, but Chuck has a new life with fiancée Carlyn (Beth Colt) and Buck's increasingly obsessive intrusions get on his nerves. Written by White, the film benefits immeasurably from his offbeat physical appearance. It's nicely scripted, skilfully directed, beautifully acted and, considering its subject matter, surprisingly warm and likeable. In a year when the blockbusters generally underachieved, this is a small film that exceeds expectations.
"...CHUCK & BUCK flies in the face of contemporary paranoia and celebrates life's possibilities without losing touch with reality or slipping into sentimentality....Impressive..."
I like this movie. It starts out playing on the clichés that underlie most TV and movie plots - friends drift apart, the mentally handicapped are simple, good people, media workers are callow, and community theatre makes everything better.
One by one, it pulls apart the clichés, not to destroy them, but to replace them with something more truthful, allowing us to see the humanity underneath.
All the while, the story moves along at a good pace. It's suspenseful and interesting, too, and well worth your time.
Wow, not sure whether I got the whole film but a real roller coaster. It was the type of film that was slow to start, then lurches totally away from where you think it is going to go. It undermines all the cliches one expects from a tired film and TV industry, and at times is shocking stuff.
The heartfelt emotional play by Buck really gets to you and his vulnerability is superbly acted. The elation and the high moments in his life are equally well shared with the audience and all in all this rather high brow movie was a great 90 mins - RENT IT NOW.
