A Decent Feel-Good MovieBy R Morris from Chester, England , 05 Sep 2005
[Highly rated reviewer]I'm not a big Russel Crowe fan but he really did himself justice in this movie with a restrained and thoughtful performance as the has-been boxer on a comeback trail.
The script was decent and just about managed to avoid becoming too self-indulgent and the fight scenes were lovingly recreated.
Renee was decent as the loving wife but did not have enough of a part to get her teeth into, but the suprise of the movie was Craig Bierko as the great Max Bear who really stood out as the playboy brawler.
The movie did get a little slow a couple of times but it did a great job of picturing life in the Great Depression and only the most cynical of movie goers will have trouble enjoying the climax of the film.

Gripping and Loved it!By Emm16 (4 reviews) , 22 Aug 2013Absolutely loved this film. I often find in these types of films that you find it hard to get into it as the main character normally isn't very likeable. However, this film breaks that mould(which surprised us considering Russell Crowe was the lead!). You really care about Braddock and his family and are routing for him all the way through, there were even some parts where I didn't want to look in case he got hurt! His relationship with his wife had the danger of being annoying but it was brilliantly acted by Crowe and Zellweger which helped in making the audience care and feel for what is happening to them. I really would recommend this film to anyone.
Definitely Watch It!By FloJo82 (3 reviews) , 10 Jul 2013Absolutely brilliant film. Fantastic performances from everyone. Humbling and uplifting true life story. Moved me to tears and makes you realise - we don't know what poor is!

Worth watchingBy a customer , 30 Mar 2013Really good film. Wonder why it's not better known. Great performances. Was worried that, as a boxing film, it would be quite brutal but the boxing scenes are handled really well and it has a really good story which is well acted and well paced.
Boxing underdog fights for his familyBy Ferry41 (229 reviews) from Oxford , 04 Jan 2013Russell Crowe battles it out in an unexpectedly sentimental boxing film. For me the film was overedited, and would have benefited with the addition of some of the supporting material shown in the deleted scenes section of the DVD. The climax fight is very extended. Quite an accessible film even if you're not really into boxing. Good but not stellar.
emotional and classy one of Russell Crowe bestBy bigmoviebuff (3 reviews) , 18 Dec 2012One of the best Crowe about in my opinion, a really great story a riches to rags to riches story on James J Braddock set back in the late 20's. The film has a great cast with renee zellweger as the loving stand by your man wife & Paul Gamatti as the manager..it's a real emotion style film but with some great boxing scenes that should get you on your seat..
