  • A Decent Feel-Good Movie

    [Highly rated reviewer]

I'm not a big Russel Crowe fan but he really did himself justice in this movie with a restrained and thoughtful performance as the has-been boxer on a comeback trail.

The script was decent and just about managed to avoid becoming too self-indulgent and the fight scenes were lovingly recreated.

Renee was decent as the loving wife but did not have enough of a part to get her teeth into, but the suprise of the movie was Craig Bierko as the great Max Bear who really stood out as the playboy brawler.

The movie did get a little slow a couple of times but it did a great job of picturing life in the Great Depression and only the most cynical of movie goers will have trouble enjoying the climax of the film.

Really good film. Wonder why it's not better known. Great performances. Was worried that, as a boxing film, it would be quite brutal but the boxing scenes are handled really well and it has a really good story which is well acted and well paced.

Russell Crowe battles it out in an unexpectedly sentimental boxing film. For me the film was overedited, and would have benefited with the addition of some of the supporting material shown in the deleted scenes section of the DVD. The climax fight is very extended. Quite an accessible film even if you're not really into boxing. Good but not stellar.

  • emotional and classy one of Russell Crowe best

One of the best Crowe about in my opinion, a really great story a riches to rags to riches story on James J Braddock set back in the late 20's. The film has a great cast with renee zellweger as the loving stand by your man wife & Paul Gamatti as the manager..it's a real emotion style film but with some great boxing scenes that should get you on your seat..

A great sporting movie, it really captures the struggle that people went through durring the great deppresion, but it also captures the spirit, courage and day to day effort that people made in order to move forward. I have watched this film many times now and will probabbly watch a few times more.... what a fantastic True story

    Top film.

Absolutely perfect if you're into sports movies but also if you're into your history.

I learnt a lot about how difficult it was to live in the Great Depression through this film.

Well acted too. Not much wrong with it full stop really. Give it a go.
