My favourite foreign film
By a customer from Manchester, UK , 13 Mar 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This has to be my favourite foreign film of all time, however, that refers to the director's cut rather than the shorter original release.
It was the director's cut I saw at the cinema first, and it was that version of the film I love. I feel the original shorter release of the film has too much cut out to complete the story.
If you like this film and haven't seen the director's cut, I strongly recommend you get your hands on a copy.- Was this review helpful to you?

(258)WITH THE DUE RESPCT, THIS FILM IS NOT FOR EVERYONE
By ER-CONTE (1 review) , 21 Mar 2013Great film! many little aspects that some of you did not consider when rating it: if you come from a rural countryside and you had to leave that place because there is no job or future you would do understand this film much more! In Italy it happened a lot that ppl from the south had to move toward the north for finding fortune, culturally the north is a bit different and ppl generally are a bit colder and most of the times, during the hard life times of an individual, you wanna go back to your lovely place of birth, where u have your family, your friends and your memories..but Alfredo in the film speaks very clear and he strongly and roughly says to toto: DO NOT EVEN THINK TO COME BACK HERE. Also in this film there is the fully conception of the southern wife/mum, a woman that spends most of her time for someone else and most of all she spends her time WAITING (she waits for her husband from the war and then she waits for a visit of her son ) the southern woman is a person that lives in a shadow of sacrifices for the family and for her fella...especially by the time of this film the figure of the woman is not yet an extroverted person as in north Europe you are used to see...great film! Another element to catch is the urbanization, Toto left his village when it was still a pretty rural village, only one cinema and a small bus once per day now he can FLY back to his place, on the way to his village he can see that something changed, big bridges now cuts his hills and when he arrives to his village he finds a chaotic town with lots of cars and noises etc...his village was just gone and ppl had to accept it, even the MAD man of the square now 'shares' HIS square with cars and ppl.. honestly this kind of film does require a deep and delicate sensibility and a superficial person might not appreciate smalls aspects of it.- Was this review helpful to you?

Nice to look back.
By Jono79con (15 reviews) , 31 Dec 2012Great feelgood/somber Italian movie, so what if it's a bit corny in places, it's great. Fully recommend this title, also the director's cut.- Was this review helpful to you?
