Light hearted slap stick martial arts comedy

City Hunter was originally a comic book and has been adapted for the screen. I must say they have done job as the film has that silly, larger then life comic book feel to it. I really enjoyed it, it had me laughing most of the way through. Don?t take this film too seriously or you?ll miss out on the fun.

    City Hunter

Private detective City Hunter (Chan) and his assistant Carrie (Wong) are charged with finding the missing daughter of a millionaire. They follow her aboard a cruise ship only for it to be taken over by a gang.

When the gang kidnaps Carrie City Hunter teams up with a female PI (Yau) to take back the ship.

Hong Kong's Roger Corman is an unlikely director for a Jackie Chan film and so it should come as little surprise that City Hunter is wildly uneven.

The mugging of the entire cast is just painful. Everything is turned up to 11, dialogue is mostly shouted and the acting is so broad that even a silent movie director would probably have said 'next take... could you do less?'

Add to this a moronic script and the insane digressions the film takes (the Streetfighter 2 sequence) and you've got something severely annoying.

On the plus side the fight sequences, when they come, are brilliant. Jackie's throwdowns with Gary Daniels and Richard Norton are lightning fast, beautifully coreographed and even sporadically amusing. There's also, this being a Wong Jing film, a plentiful helping of eye candy, Joey Wong and Chingmy Yau are certainly gorgeous and Yau, even dubbed and limited an actress as she is, has real screen charisma.

It's the film the fast forward button was invented for but it's not devoid of merit.
