    [Highly rated reviewer]

For me this is television at its best!! Vibrant, exciting, scary, funny, depressing and heart warming, this series is many things!!

I love the styles, the different film stocks and techniques!! The photography is very strong indeed!!

And its a very character based piece and I found them very endearing and I was firmly behind them all the way!!

My two favourite episodes was 'Post'from the first series and 'Saturday' on the second!

If you liked 'Cidade de Deus' (City Of God) or 'Carandiru', then I guarantee that you will appreciate this one!! It's a real gem!!!!!

    Peace!

You either like these or hate them, I liked it. It's difficult to believe from the comfort of my home that these conditions still exist in this day and age, and that human beings live, flourish and bring up children in such places when just a few hundred yards away there exists a totally different culture and way of life with the film showing how these two alien environments occasional encrouch on each other. Have just watched the second disc. Again its a facinating insight into how other cultures live. It is somewhat spoilt for viewing by the fast frame and flash photography hat I found made it difficult to follow the film and should imagine would be dangerous to anyone with epilepsy or similar disability. Good but could be so much better, acting is almost faultless considering these are amatuers..

  • A series of two halves

Series 1 Disc 1- intense, believable & memorable. Amonst the best TV you will see anywhere.

Series 2 Disc 2- First 4 episodes try to create a Brazilian 'Happy Days' & fail intensely. The fifth episode about a drug dealer trying to reform is better but not up to Series 1.

There is no character or underlying plot development in series 2 so it is largely redundant.

    Now for the movie....

Is this Brazil's Coronation Street? Happy-go-Lucky favela kids have amusing adventures. I wish it was reality!

Very good series. Almost a TV version of 'Coty Of Men' the excellent Brazilian movie that was released a few years ago. The acting in this show was believable, and the tension was evident. You can tell minimum budget was used, but that almost makes the programme even more authentic and suits the slum, poor feel of the area they are filming in. Good show, just a shame it was in Brazilian/Portuguese. Took a lot of effort to watch an entire series subtitled.
