Worth the EffortBy a customer from East Anglia, England , 12 Dec 2003
[Highly rated reviewer]I have to be honest I put the film on and saw the subtitles, played around on the DVD trying to find the english soundtrack, no joy. Oh well might as well keep it on while I finish my cup of tea. Two hours later I sat there gob smacked. The photograpthy throughout was superb, acting just as good. But its the story that grips you, from start to finish. Reading the subtitles is no longer a chore. If you have never watched a subtitled movie before (like myself) I can wholeheartedly recommend giving this one a go!

Brutal but honestBy Erasedcitizen (21 reviews) , 24 Sep 2013A brutal but honest film that's based on true events and gives a real incite into the crime within the slums of Brazil. Very well filmed.
The Movie Of The Slums.By Alexander-UK (128 reviews) , 28 Aug 2013I really loved this movie and found it was brutal and to the point and it takes no prisoners. The story from my understanding of the Slums in Rio through a friend, is precise and true and i would recommend this movie to anyone for educational purposes alone. Brilliant acting and for me the time flew by on this movie, always a sign that it has captured you in the plot.
A gritty, heartbreaking but excellent film!By a customer , 01 Aug 2013I absolutely loved this film, don't let the subtitles put you off if you're not usually a fan - within 5 minutes of the film starting I had forgotten that I was even using them! It's a captivating film, beautifully shot and really heart breaking at times, telling a gritty and often disturbing story of life in the slums of Brazil. It's an amazing film and definitely worth watching, although is perhaps not for the fainthearted! If you have watched and enjoyed Sin Nombre, then this will definitely be up your street!
Rio's slums a million miles away from CopacabanaBy Mokky (21 reviews) , 31 Jul 2013I'd wanted to see this early film from Fernando Meirelles for some time, since I saw his brilliant 'Constant Gardener' set in and around Kenya's Kibera slums. And 'City of God' doesn't disappoint - it's a gripping cleverly-constructed tale of the gangs that operated in Rio's favella slums in the 1980s. Yes, it's scary, and violent in places, makes you despair - and gives you a glimpse of what the future may be like in many overpopulated cities in the 21st century.
