  • A Balanced Portrail of a Terrible Event

Usually with any wartime film or docudrama you only get a one sided view, however with this excellent piece of work you are able to witness the terrible events of Nanking in a more balanced manner. Thats not to say it is in any way easy viewing, the director has chosen a black & white format that actually makes the events seem even more of a first hand experience and at times it is truely unbelieveable, the unrelenting autrocities that the Japanese committed. Nontheless I do recommend the viewing of this movie not only as a first class piece of film making but also so that the events of Nanking do not get forgotten in history.

Extremely upsetting and disturbing film, I stopped watching after a child is thrown out of a window by a japanese soldier. From what i have read on the web the actual events in Nanking were horrific and im sure if this film was anymore realistic it could not be released.

This is a tough one to watch, it's a brilliantly made film but it is so harrowing and upsetting that it's a hard one to get through. I'll be the first to admit that I only knew a little of the events in Nanking in 1937 but this film recreates everything and does well in showing the persepctive of both sides. The only film I could compare this to is Schindler's List and I'd certainly rate it as high as that movie. Well acted and filmed throughout, well worth checking out

Chuan Lu's harrowing account of the 1937 siege of Nanking-in which the Japanese invaders killed some 300,000 Chinese inhabitants-is shot in period black-and-white,lending the authority of a historical artefact. The drama focuses on a horrified Japanese sergeant(Hideo Nakaizumi) and Fan Wei's heroic assistant to John Rabe, the German businessman who established a safe haven for thousands of the persecuted.

The victory march by the Japanese soldiers was the best of the bits that I managed to watch. A bit gruesome otherwise.

  • good film, bad encoding

Beautifully shot in monochrome, the cameraman definitely made his focus puller work hard, very shallow depth of field, not to high contrast. Some dodgy CGI at the beginning of the film...so much for the technical side. Oh, forgot: the BluRay is a waste of time, as the encoding is 480i, looks really bad when you are expecting 1080p or at least 720p. My BD player recognizes the encoding and displays it, might as well sell it as a DVD.

Very well chosen 'character' faces but it does not work very well as a feature film, more as a documentary: we learn about the harshness of war and the cruelty of the Japanese, very little dialogue, but then must there always be a plot, american style or are impressions and moments enough to carry the material: I think so.
