Does this sequel to City of God have the same impact as its predecessor?

    [Highly rated reviewer]

City of men maintained a real sense of danger throughout. A little slow at times but it kept me unable to look away with it's constant threat of what was just around the corner. My pulse raced as the film allowed my thoughts to run away with me.

It manages to be a really good tale of the two young men involved without becoming a film overrun with violence and shocking scenes. The understated and the almost normality of the killings in the film shock in a different place than the usual stylized violence we are used to in modern cinema.

Definitely worth a watch but do not expect the same kind of pace or content as City Of God which for me remains a far superior movie. Mind you, I don't think this was meant to compete.

  • Loved it - glued to the screen...

I couldn't take my eyes off the screen during this film. The characters had real depth and I was hooked on their lives. An insight in to the poverty in Rio - whereby you cannot dislike any of the characters, only feel genuine empanthy for the decisions that each of them have made in their lives. The two lead characters (one of whom has a 3 yr old son) are intensely likeable and you watch the film pleading that something will go right for this trio - or that at least it won't in end in tragedy. The film keeps you guessing until the end...

  • Adults only Brazilian slum sitcom

Though not as great as its predecessor 'City Of God' this is still a worthwhile watch.

It tells the story of two best friends and their struggle with living in a Brazilian slum at the end of their chilhood.

Again the acting is faultless but the pace of the film does tend to lag at times.

As with the previous film it's a brutal glimpse into Brazilian poverty.

You don't really see the difference in Bluray quality over DVD

This film follows two friends caught up in drug wars between rival gangs in Rio de Janeiro. Has a real documentary feel to it, and is very realistic. The screenplay could have been better developed, and the film feels a bit lightweight compared to City of God. However, nonetheless very watchable.
