...which is ridiculous because much of the horror shown is taken from newsreel footage at the time.

This is an epic story of a noble man who was in fact a Nazi and who is totally forgotten today. It is historically absolutely accurate and although not to everyone's taste, it is a magnificent motion picture.

  • Excellent depiction of real heroism and brutality

Without a shadow of a doubt one of the best depictions of the little told story of the Rape of Nanking in 1937 where upwards of 300,000 Chinese were killed by the invading Japanese army. Made in China with a Chinese crew but with a German director and European cast in all the main roles, the story is told using the central character of John Rabe who emerged as a key character in the saving of over 200,000 Chinese by assisting in the creation of a safe zone during the height of the massacre. Rabe kept a detailed diary and much of the film uses information from these. The film uses the characters own languages (English, German, Chinese and Japanese) which adds immeasurably to the reality. The sub-titles are excellent and very clear so I cannot understand the criticism of the film on these grounds. This is a film of heroism on the one hand and brutality on the other. Above all it is a depiction of a dreadfully brutal period in history that I can strongly recommend to anyone who wants to learn about a little know peice of recent history in a very well made film.

The story is an interesting one but i gave up on this film a quarter of the way in because of the sub titles. The main language is advertised as English but this film is mainly in German and Japanese with English sub titles only. It is not easy to keep up with the action when your eyes have to stay focused on sub titles

Incredible but no - actually true. Not sure how much poetic licence has been exercised but if only two thirds of it is true, then its an absolutely heroic story.

Couple of things that really stand out, a) the brutality of the Japanese Imperial troops; b) the courage of people in the face of savage inhumanity.

Schindler's list for the Far East.

I'm afraid I gave up on this film at the mid point as the all to frequent changes from sub-titled German to english ground me down. I'm afraid this is one of my pet hates ... but alas, it seems to be an all to common feature of late. Why on earth must we suffer it? I don't know about you, but I'm quite happy with a heavily accented form of english if a foreign language is required.

Up to the point where I surrendered, the film was half decent ... and that's all I can say.

Excellent story based on fact. Only the English parts are spoken in English, the rest (the majority) is in German, Japanese and Chinese with sub titles. Although this makes it harder to follow it does add a real life quality to the film. On the whole I enjoyed this film.
