Harryhausen's swan song
By a customer from Birmingham, UK , 05 Feb 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
This was the last film which employed the talents of Ray Harryhausen and features some of his best work. The stop-go animations hold up well against modern CGI methods, for example, the sequence using Medusa not only required a slight change in movement for each frame of the sequence, but as Medusa had thirteen snakes on her head each of these needed minor movements also! The plot itself revolves around the legend of Perseus and Andromeda, and while not knowing enough myself to vouch for the story's accuracy, I know that the film has been used in some American schools as part of taught modules on Greek mythology. As an owner of the US DVD release, the film transfer is bright and colourful although there has been no restoration, it appears to have been taken from the same master which was used for the VHS and laserdisk versions of ten years ago. The disk extras include a featurette of Ray Harryhausen's memories of the film, a type of feature which appears on many of his previous DVD releases. Of particular interest to many British fans will be the cameo of Pat 'Bomber' Roach in the film, known to many for his character in 'Auf Weidersen Pet' but to me (and I'm showing my age here!) as a tough wrestler on Saturday afternoon's ITV wrestling spot in the 1970s.- Was this review helpful to you?

(28)Great animation, shame about the rest of it
By a customer , 12 Feb 2012I am a huge fan of the animations of Ray Harryhausen. As always, they're great in this film, but the rest of the film is pretty poor. Harry Hamlin is simply aweful. Lawrence Olivier and Maggie Smith are good, as you'd expect. The plot's pretty lame. It's Sunday afternoon and it's the only time I would recommend watching this film. Sit in your PJ's with a cup of tea and love the animations, forgiving the film for everything else because the animations are cool enough on their own.- Was this review helpful to you?

Bubo FTW!
By a customer , 12 Jul 2011I can understand the nostalgia value this holds for those who saw it as children, for me it had only limited appeal, except for mechanical owl Bubo, who should be given an oscar :P Bubo FTW!- Was this review helpful to you?

Rent the dvd instead
By onion (314 reviews) from leeds , 25 Jun 2011First off, I love this film! There's always been something about Ray Harryhausen's stop motion effects that CGI just can't match.
Granted some of of the acting (ahem, Harry Hamlin) isn't that great, but everything else more than makes up for it.
The main reason i'm writing this review though is to address the poor blu-ray transfer. I already own the dvd version but thought i might treat myself to the hd version.
It isn't great. I watched it on a 42 inch screen and it just looks way too blown up and grainy. Honestly, it looks like it was taken from an old vhs copy!
Granted, the dvd may not fill the screen, but it looks so much better. Rent that instead.- Was this review helpful to you?

LONG TIME NO SEE
By a customer from Derby , 24 Mar 2011An excellent drag back to the 80's when I first watched this film. The new version's CGI seem majorly naff compared to the stop-motion excellence of this one and you have to remember how ahead of his time Harry H was.
Perseus is still as wooden as ever but the Penguin is his old self and Pegasus still makes my heart flutter!- Was this review helpful to you?

Not so titanic anymore
By RJNeb2 (924 reviews) from London , 13 Mar 2011What's the point in packing your film with an amazing cast and giving them absolutely nothing to do? So, while hunky Harry Hamlin down on earth has all sorts of mythological adventures as Perseus, the big names stand around on Mount Olympus and, well, just stand there. Designed mainly as a showcase for Ray Harryhausen's quaint little plasticene creature effects (his Medusa holds up the best), the leaps in FX technology over the intervening years have rendered this rather redundant. And the addition of the so-called comedy mechanical owl/ R2D2 substitute only serves to date it even more.- Was this review helpful to you?
