  • So Much More Than Smoke On The Water

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Machine Head is one of the best albums ever made. Period. Yet so many people remember it by THAT riff. You know the one...

Maybe I'm in a minority in thinking that Smoke On The Water isn't the highlight of the album or the best song Deep Purple ever did. Whatever, it is right that the full story about the recording of the album be told.

And what a story! You really couldn't have written a script for this. Part master plan, part disaster, part Carry On, it's amazing how the band managed to record the album at all.

A triumph for creativity and determination. The story about the route the band had to take to go and listen to any of the work is comical.

All the Machine Head songs are featured including When A Blind Man Cries, but Lazy seems to be missing. Maybe I missed something. Nice to see Highway Star and Space Truckin' get the credit they deserve.

There's so much more than Smoke On The Water. That's always been true of Deep Purple. Watch this DVD, listen to Machine Head afterwards and appreciate just how good this album really is.

great DVD taking you behind the scenes in the studio, the Montreaux story is well documented, good interviews with members of the band giving up their secrets.

  • Too Short !

When British hard rock band Deep Purple released their MACHINE HEAD album in 1972, it almost immediately became part of the hard rock canon. Featuring the song that non-fans know them for, 'Smoke On The Water,' the album is still considered a classic. This documentary tells the story of the record's creation through interviews with the key personalities available.

  • bit short...

It was a fairly interesting documentary, but i personally felt it was a bit short. it said on the case it was 100mins, but i reckon i watch it for 45mins before the credits rolled and can't believe the deleted scenes are that long!! was interesting to learn how Smoke SHOULD be played and I enjoyed the conversational tone when Richie Blackmore says, 'I was talking to Pete Townsend...'

I watched this as a musician interested in seeing the stories behind recording the big albums and did enjoy it from that point of view. I think if you are a big Purple fan then watch this, if you just know Smoke and Black Night you can live without it.

Entertaining and interesting. All the band members talked intelligently about their music. They may be greying, but the passion is still there. The live clips remind you why they were a great rock band and they managed to convey verbally the essence of their music - not easy.

All that plus a promoter called Claud Nobs - ouch!
