Kevin Smith is to follow in the footsteps of directors John Waters and Guy Maddin - he will be handed the prestigious Filmmaker on the Edge Award at this year's (10) Provincetown Film Festival. Smith will accept the honour - handed out since 1999 for a boundary-pushing body of work - during the event, which runs 16-20 June (10) in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Kevin Smith signed on to direct new comedy Cop Out as a tribute to his late father. The filmmaker's latest release stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan as a pair of detectives on the hunt for a stolen collectible baseball card. Filmmaker Kevin Smith is so confident fans will enjoy his first foray into horror, he financed the movie independently after studio bosses passed on the project. The Clerks director searched for executives to back his horror debut, Red State, for nearly three years, with his regular sponsors Harvey and Bob Weinstein turning down the dark script. Director Kevin Smith has been forced to change the name of his new Bruce Willis cop comedy because studio bosses felt A Couple Of Dicks would lead to marketing issues. The Clerks filmmaker wanted to use the controversial title for the forthcoming film, but changed his mind after learning commercials promoting the project would be banned from three of the top U.S. TV networks.
