Oldies are the bestBy suelyn from cheshire , 26 Feb 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]The first of its type and still holding its own. Not having watched this film in a lot of years I thought maybe I had remembered it through rose tinted glasses. However I was not disappointed. A thoroughly enjoyable film!

Not bad but not one of the greatsBy a customer from Sheffield , 06 Nov 2008Not a bad sci fi film - solid enough but a bit too much sentiment over substance.
close encounters of the third kindBy a customer from Boston , 02 Nov 2008We rented this film because we had recently visited the Devils Tower, the site used for the alien landings. Enjoyed the film more than when i first saw it 30 years ago. Though the stoey and the special effects had stood the test of time.
classicBy ces4bulls (23 reviews) from Bradford , 15 Jul 2008classic sci-fi and i think everybody on the planet has seen it, but if you've just arrived on this planet....give it a go :-)
Another Spielberg MasterpieceBy Edward Frost from England, Essex , 22 Apr 2008I went into this film with high expectations and boy did it deliver, giving an extremely atmospheric and ultimately stunning narrative coupled with groundbreaking special effects.
Richard Dreyfuss gives a very nuanced performance of a man so invested in his belief of the sightings of UFO's that he overcomes everything he stands for to investigate it, and ultimately going crazy because of it.
The special effects are awe-inspiring and the film progresses along at a balanced rate, giving us an insight into the characters and what theyre dealing with.
The landing sequence at the films climax is particularly powerful as it grips the audience and leaves them with a feeling of suh fulfillment, much in the vein of Spielbergs other alien film-'E.T.'
I praise Spielberg because he doesnt paint UFO's in a bad light, instead making them appear sweet and friendly, ultimately accepting that the two species are different.
Watch this if you want to be completely taken away by a film about extra terrestrials and a mans quest for answers.
A pleasant fairytale.....By a customer from Billingshurst , 21 Mar 2008I hadn't seen this film since I was young and had always assumed it was mearly a cool alien picture. Seeing it now I realise it is so much more then that. Richard Dreyfuss is excellent as the man struggling to keep himself together infront of his family.
It's actually a film more about family hardship and how obcession can tear family's apart
