Brenda Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick, THE WOODSMAN, BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY) arrives from Atlanta to head up the LAPD's Priority Homicide Division, a unit that specialises in sensitive, high-profile criminal cases. Almost immediately, her mix of brassy toughness and Southern sass begins to rub the mostly male policemen the wrong way. They resent this eccentric, folksy, and occasionally neurotic woman running the show. But when it comes to her CIA-trained interrogation skills, they're forced to admit that she's a pro's pro, a psychological surgeon who gets inside the subjects' minds and draws out their darkest secrets and confessions. In the explosive first series, Johnson and her team tackle the rape and murder of a politician's daughter, an escalating gangland war, the assassination of an Iranian businessman, and other dangerous crimes. Through all this, Johnson deals with her troubled past, her problematic romances, and even betrayal by members of her own team. Riveting police drama from the team behind NIP TUCK.

Sassy southern girl is drafted in to take charge of LA's new and prestigious murder unit, over the heads of the regular guys: so far, seen-it-all-before. The difference is Kyra Sedgwick in the lead role. Playing a faded beauty with a sloppy and chaotic private life, abrasive and manipulative and trailing a history of failed romances, this is a totally different woman from those impossibly young, well groomed and characterless female second-leads we have become so used to in CSI and L&O spinoffs. The supporting cast is excellent, (mercifully free from that irritating white college jock) and the office politics are a real and contributing part of the scene. The script is taut and the criminal investigations, (so far) are credible - more like the original and best L&O than the way-out titillation which has become the frequent offering in equivalent cop shows. The Closer is shaping up to be a winner.
Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh is a tough ex CIA agent in charge of the Priority Murder Squad, which deals with sensitive and high profile murders. She uses her southern manners and insight to get results. The internal politics within the police department are the hardest part of her job, with her team and other members of the police department sabotaging her efforts and character.
