The first time I watched this film I wasn't too impressed and fell asleep before the end. I decided to give it another go recently and realised it wasn't as bad as I remembered.
Essentially, the film just isn't very exciting. Centering on the activities of one young alternative band trying to get gigs and get noticed in Hollywood, but ultimately running into trouble of the criminal and romantic kind, it's part action thriller, part teen movie that ambles along at a reasonable pace largely thanks to central character and band frontman Jimmy Tuckett's laid back, slacker style demeanour. Meanwhile, Lori Petty does a rather disturbing impression of a Courtney Love/Katie Jane Garside character as an confrontational, drug-addicted frontwoman, and there's smaller appearances from the likes of Terence Trent D'Arby, a 'blink and you'll miss it' appearance from Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and several other indie bands. The main thing I was left thinking after watching this was what exactly was the attraction of the band's stodgy, post-grunge music in the first place? Plus, the romantic storyline is sort of 'left hanging', a bit strange given it's a major part of the plot.
Overall OK, but ultimately promises more than it delivers. Given the star turns and the people involved behind the scenes, I'd expected this to be better.
