If anyone in Beverly Hills is clued in, it's Cher. She's almost 16, she's rich, she's way popular, and she loves letting the world benefit by her expertise in all of life's important issues--like dating, fashions and looking good. Would you believe a loose adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma plonked down squarely in Beverly Hills 90210? Well, that's the setting for this screamingly funny satire-cum-put-on, which perfectly captures the inanities of contemporary teen America. Alicia Silverstone is a delight as Cher, the chic but dippy blonde who's devoted to improving the love lives of her Rodeo Drive-shopping high-school girlfriends, even though she can't sort out her own. Together with her best friend Dionne (Stacey Dash), Cher indulges in the trials and tribulations of designer-label animosity and MTV promiscuity, while her lawyer father (Dan Hedaya) and intellectual stepbrother (Paul Rudd) look on in total bemusement. Like Heathers before it, director Amy Heckerling's smart satire sharpens its comedic scalpel on the manners and mores of self-centred fashion victims. A quick note about the Clueless lingo: majorly means very, do-able means sexually attractive, a hottie is a do-able babe and a Baldwin is a gorgeous hunk. While mainly aimed at teens, like all fine comedies it will appeal to anyone with a wicked sense of humour and taste for the ironic. It's also one of those rare comedies which remains funny even when not delivering great one-liners. Examples? What did you do in school today? Oh, I broke in my purple clogs; What's the point of learning to park when every place you go to has a valet?; My plastic surgeon doesn't want me doing any activity where balls fly at my nose. You'll have to watch the movie to hear the hilariously vulgar riposte to the latter.
A surprisingly successful comedy about a girl who loves to shop, an activity that satisfies when all else fails. The dialogue is witty, the performances are smart and the tone is one of affectionate amusement touched with a little irony; the result is gre

Cher Horowitz and her friend Dionne, two of the most popular sophomores in school, play matchmakers for two teachers. Inspired by their success, Cher takes under her wing Tai, a 'clueless' transfer student. While trying to make an advantageous match for Tai, Cher attempts to find a boyfriend of her own. Several misfires take place, due to poor communication, before she finds the Baldwin of her dreams.
Funny all the way through, simple plot, easy to watch, pure entertainment. There's just nothing to hate this film for. It's damn near perfect.
I love this movie. I saw it in the cinema when it first came out and have seen it a number of times and still enjoy it. Maybe because I'm Canadian I enjoy it more than the Brits because the humour is very much US centric. On the whole it's a modern teen movie dealing with teen morals.
Alicia Silverstone stars as matchmaker Cher in this Beverly Hills reworking of Jane Austen's Emma.
Cher - coolest girl in school, incredibly ditzy - and her best friend Dion love to see how their matchmaking plans work out, so when a new girl (Brittany Murphy) turns up at school, they can't wait to give her a makeover and find her a guy. But in spite of Cher's skills fixing up her friends, she can't seem to get herself a beau of her own, especially with dorky step-brother Josh (Paul Rudd) in the way.
This is a great feelgood romcom, whose writer hits the spot with her observation of 15-year-olds' slang. This is itself is an entertainment but there are some funny moments as Cher tries to argue her way out of "harsh" bad grades and even a failed driving test. One for the girls - get your Ben & Jerry's out on a Friday night in and giggle along.

Old film-but only just watched it lately. Reminded me very much of 'Mean Girls'. Watchable.Amusing at times.
This modern reworking of Jane Austens 'Emma' might well be best appreciated by those who are familar with the original. If you aren't, never mind, I believe that it still works but it confounds expectations a little as the central character does not really conform to modern genre stereotypes so you might have to work a little harder than you expected to or see it several times to really 'get it'.
On an unrelated note the (lack of) extra features I found a little disapointing (for a 4 star) - there are two versions of the trailer and thats the lot. I guess this might be to do with the comparitive age of the movie but I like the movie that much that I decided not to mark it down for this.
Have seen it loads of times but had to see it again!!! It's just great!! If you hate the character you're just taking it too seriously!!
Wow! This is a movie to watch with a bunch of girlfriends at a slumber party!! Alicia Sliverstone plays a beautiful Beverly Hills High student trying to deal with poularity, clothes (of course), an endless supply of charge cards, days at the mall, and love. When it all boils down to one inevitable conclusion... she is totally and completely clueless. A funny yet silly movie for girls of all ages.
Life as a pretentious young thing in the 1990s, and equally applicable in the 2000's.
Rich young kids, all drop-dead gorgeous, all very educated and cultured, wearing good clothes and living wonderful lives.
This works on so many levels that it just has to be watched. The story itself is based on Jane Austen's Emma, set in modern day America. It takes a certain sense of irony to appreciate the humour, but it is very funny.
What seemed at first to be nothing more than an average teen comedy, I now feel is a lot more. It's got some depth to it that you might not see at first.
One to watch a few times, in my opinion.
Someone tells me this po-mo teen flick is like based on Shakespeare or something ... well, whatever ... the costumes are gross and so are the characters, but I found its smug, spoilt heroine endearing and underneath its veeneer of vacuousness were hidden layers of meaning ... go figure.
