Two bartenders (Tom Cruise and Bryan Brown) at a busy Manhattan watering hole dream of someday owning their own bars. Their lives consist of elaborate drink-mixing performances and sleeping with many of the female customers, until a fight over a woman causes the younger bartender, Brian (Cruise), to flee to Jamaica. Having turned fighter pilots and pool players into sex objects in Top Gun and The Color of Money, Tom Cruise attempted to do the same service for, er, bartenders in this romantic comedy. You'd better believe it. Cruise learns all about the meaning of life by mixing drinks, under the tutelage of Martini-mentor Bryan Brown. Admittedly, Cruise's technique is pretty impressive; he juggles with bottles, jiggles his behind and makes his female customers drunk with desire. But then along comes Elisabeth Shue, who makes him re-assess his lifestyle. Cue lots of serious dialogue. Perhaps the best one can say for this bland concoction mixed by agents and the studio executives is that every bartender in Hollywood wants to be Tom Cruise and that suffices as an ironic subtext. Fans of Paul Verhoeven's pitiful Showgirls might like to check out Gina Gershon with her clothes on.
If a visitor from Mars needed a crash course in sexism, this would serve. Freshly demobbed, Brian Flanagan (Cruise)... read more on Time Out
Glossy nonsense.
My wife forced me to watch this film and I must admit it was a better than your average film. Storyline was not a new concept but it was acted well by Cruise and Bryan Brown. All in all a decent movie!
Slated by the critics, but loved by the public ! Cruise dazzles as the new kid in town trying to make it big in New York. He learns to be a cocktail barman and his life takes a new direction. Love, friendship, happiness, sadness, betrayal and Jamaica - they are all here !
Cruise is a cool guy in Cocktail - chicks love him, and blokes want to be him.
Highly recommended, and a good soundtrack too.
Fantastic film, one of Tom's best from the eighties. Full of Cheesey lines but great. Good soundtrack too!!
Never saw this the first time round! Yummy Tom Cruise has all the moves and seems ideally suited to being a bartender. As you will see there is far more to the film. It's worth watching just to revisit those 80's hairstyles and fashions. Great fun, with a moral twist at the end.
Love Tom Cruise 80's style especially the monobrow. Everyone in the family enjoyed the film at our best of the 80's film fest.

if you like Tom rent it if you dont dont bother what more can i say
its a clasic
First of all, if you aren't a Tom Cruise fan then you probably won't like this. Tom leaves the army and plans to make his fortune. His spirits soon sink when no one in the city wants to give him a start on the ladder to success. Working at a bar he meets Bryan Brown and they pull the crowds in as all action cocktail makers. Tom ends up in Jamacia and meets Elizabeth Shue. Things get complicated of course, and the Hollywood machine kicks in as usual. It's a reasonably enjoyable journey as long as you don't expect too much.
A good all round film with lots of feel good factor. Not one for oscar acting but nevertheless very entertaining.
this is indeed a classic, very cheesy feel good film. dont expect anything deep and special, full of cliche characters. but you cant help but love the film. I am big tom cruise fan so am bias but I implore you to rent this!
Always a favourite of mine. Not as good as Top Gun. Elizabeth Shue and Tom is in strange relationship that somehow works out in the end. Well worth watching.
Great film, musical bar film, brings back memories, Go on watch it again.
Easy watching tale of a guy trying to make his way in the world and how working behind a bar can be as entertaining as being in front of one.
Bryan Brown makes this film.
