I find Hanecke's films dull at the best of times, and can't believe what some of the critics and beard-strokers wrote about this one.

The endless long takes where nothing happens. Yes, he may be trying to make it true to life. But we watch a film wanting it to be well edited, to make the experience enjoyable instead of sitting there thinking 'What exactly is the point of this scene and when will it end?'

I found myself sitting with my friend and actually betting how long a scene would go on for. There's one completely irrelevant scene where a tractor is ploughing a field. It takes 30 seconds to pass the camera, and then you are left with a view of the field and the receding sound of the tractor. I quipped 'I bet it comes back around again'. It didn't, but it was just about the only exciting thing about watching this film.

The most overrated director of his generation. Garbage.
