Tongue in cheek hilarityBy a customer from Yorkshire, UK , 09 Dec 2006
[Highly rated reviewer]This made me laugh all the way through - splendidly diverting. If you like the silly dialogue and wit of PG Wodehouse and Oscar Wilde then I think you'll probably like this a lot.
It's based on the novel written by Stella Gibbons as a pastiche of the pastoral novel and is thus very tongue in cheek.
The cast is very impressive and have an excellent pedigree. It's fun to spot them all. Everyone plays their roles with relish but stand-outs have to go to Kate Beckinsale (who was funny and great before she became a Californian), Joanna Lumley and Stephen Fry who deliver their lines brilliantly.
Good for a family afternoon with tea and crumpets!

Daft ... a waste of viewing timeBy a customer , 02 Jan 2013I can't understand why people rave over this movie. It was recommended to me and I'm beginning to think someone was 'having a laugh'. On a more serious note, this was supposed to be a comedy but in reality, there was very little to laugh about. I switched off after 30 minutes, how come so many well known names got involved with this film is beyond me. Totally daft ... and not recommended.
True to the book and good funBy oldfashioned (18 reviews) , 09 May 2012Entertaining and intelligent, I think Stella Gibbons would approve. It's old but not too dated and a really good cast.

good family film very enjoyableBy a customer , 22 Nov 2011A great family film. I haven't read the book so couldn't compare but it's well worth watching. Good acting too
Wonderful movie - really enjoyedBy a customer , 18 Sep 2011Kate Beckinsdale is supremely cool when she moves to the country to live on a farm whose occupants are 'strange' at best and mad at worst. Definitely recommend this movie
