Directed by Anthony Minghella (THE ENGLISH PATIENT), this Civil War saga addresses romance, friendship, and the ravages of war--both in the field and on the home front. Academy Award winning director Anthony Minghella has died at the age of 54, his agent has reportedly announced. According to the Guardian, Minghella passed away early this morning after suffering a haemorrhage. Last week, he underwent an operation to tackle cancer in his tonsils and neck, the paper said. Minghella was widely acknowledged as one of Britain's most accomplished directors. He won the Best Director Oscar in 1997 for The English Patient, which dominated that year's ceremony taking... Nevertheless, the film, which is set in the 50s and based on the childhood memories of US... Read more
Angelina Jolie, Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts have come out triumphant in a poll to find America's favourite ever Academy Awards winners. Hanks has twice walked away with the Best Actor Oscar, for 1993's Philadelphia and the following year's Forrest Gump. He saw off competition from Russell Crowe (Gladiator) and late star Paul Newman (The Color of Money) to be crowned America's most popular winner of the trophy, according to a joint survey by U.S. magazine Parade and Entertainment Tonight to... "I want to get better. I am absolutely determined that I'll keep trying to learn and not know too much and just see what happens." So promised the writer-director Anthony Minghella the last time I saw him, in the autumn of 2006, with a combination of resolve and humility which was typical of the man. It's a great shame we have been robbed of his talent at an age (54) when so much more could have been expected. Erudite, loquacious, gracious and accomplished, Minghella was always a pleasure to...
